In the future, will all surfboards be made from mushrooms?
Surfers are a naturally eco-minded lot. But, unless your stick is made of wood, it's creation (and eventual disposal) is probably a petrochemical and fiberglass environmental nightmare. A company in California is answering this disconnect with an innovative new board design using Myco Foam technology comprising of mushroom-based materials which are entirely biodegradable. Unlike conventional surfboards, the Mushroom Surfboard is grown, rather than shaped,. They also can be grown to various stiffnesses with particular riders and breaks in mind. The same "living plastic" material is being used for myriad other uses as well and is something we will likely be seeing lots more of.
