As air travel grows, world's first airport emergency room opens at DFW

DFW International Airport is now home to what's being touted as the first airport emergency room in the world. Along with doctors and nurses, the facility has CT scanners, a full lab, a pharmacy, and X-ray and ultrasound machines. “What we’re seeing a lot of is chest pain from arriving flights as far as the traveling public goes,” de Moor said. “We’re also seeing from the employees that are on property a number of cases of heat exhaustion and other work-related injuries.” Code 3 is currently looking to airlines for guidance on where to build next and hopes that more airport ERs will be constructed in the future. “I think that there’s definitely a need,” de Moor said. “Not every single airport that’s out there can sustain having an emergency department. I do think it’s a great model and a need that I would like to see expanding. We definitely hope to see it expand not only in the United States but potentially throughout the world.”
