Airline wants you to join the mile-high selfie club
Critics malign the selfie trend for celebrating narcissism. Companies, on the other hand, are embracing this trend as an avenue for free promotion. More and more we are seeing tourism destinations and other venues creating "Instagram moments" that invite customers to take photos of themselves and post to social media. Now Virgin Atlantic airline is urging its passengers to do the same, by promoting designated “selfie spots and offering free access to Facebook on their airplane's inflight WiFi networks. The result is win-win: Fliers won’t be charged for the WiFi access needed to check and post to their Facebook pages. And Virgin Atlantic gets planeloads of enthusiastic social media users who provide exposure to the brand while boasting about being on the carrier's new 787 aircraft.
