Culture clash as Taittinger becomes Official Champagne of FIFA World Cup amid protests against inequality in Brazil
In Brazil, demonstrations against huge spending on football while many of the country's citizens lack basic services are attracting hundreds of thousands of protesters. Against this backdrop, Champagne Taittinger has just announced that is has secured "official Champagne" status for its namesake brand at next year's FIFA World Cup football tournament. The family-owned company announced today that it signed a sponsorship deal with the global football body that will run until the end of 2015. Simply bad timing or another example of how the so-called One-Percent seems to have a tin ear to public sentiment?
