"Islamic values "Barbie" recites the Quran
A new hijab-wearing doll that recites passages from the Quran is hitting shelves in the Arab states. Designed by Samira Amarir, the Barbie-like doll is named Jenna. It's intended to teach young girls about Islamic values and provide a doll that resembles them. Ms Amarir said she was looking for a toy to help her daughter learn the Quran when she came up with the idea to create a doll. "For me it was important that the doll would show something my daughter can recognize herself in, or recognize her mother at least," she told Reuters. Jenna comes dressed in a lilac robe with a headscarf, and recites four chapters from the Quran.
The dolls are being mass-produced in factories in China and are currently being sold in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE.
