Sugary drinks are experiencing sluggish sales as semi-sweet sodas start to trend
The fizzy drinks industry is once again going through a change as consumers turn away from super sugary sodas and chemical-laden diet drinks as well. Gaining traction in their place is a new category of carbonated drinks that have some sweetness, but not so much to be cloying. Xumma is a good example of this trend: a semi sweet cola that contains about half the sugar of Coke and Pepsi, and is far less sweet than most people are used to. In addition to containing fewer calories, many of these new drinks are also more natural than the mainstream brands, made with cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Interestingly, many drinkers say that when colas are less sweet you can actually taste the cola nut flavor that is ordinarily masked by sugar.
