What comes after dynamic airline pricing? Dynamic supermarket pricing, of course
Perishable groceries are getting the airline treatment. A company called Wasteless is looking to connect sell-by dates with pricing, so as fresh foods age they automatically decline in price to spur sales. The company argues this is also a great strategy to reduce waste. Normally, supermarkets put analogue stickers on foods they're looking to move, but this system is all digital, connecting with digital price markers. Of course, AI is involved too, so that the pricing software can learn from previous behaviors, as well as make adjustments for related events, like the weather, amount of stock on hand and other inputs. The system is currently being tested by Hoogvliet, a supermarket chain with 71 stores across the Netherlands.
