In the US, new highways are encouraging people to drive less
New construction on Colorado's Highway 36, which connects Denver and Boulder, Colorado, is actively trying to make people drive less. It's being done with a combination of carrots and sticks. On the plus side is a dedicated fast lane for high-occupancy vehicles and bus rapid transit service. There highway is also incorporating a bike path. The stick comes in the form of a high-tech toll system exclusively for single-occupant cars. According to Victor Mendez, the head of the Federal Highway Administration, "This innovative approach is what we’re looking for in the future. It’s an exciting project."
